FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mountain View Internal Medicine & Pediatrics Reaches Out to Educate
Community on topics of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis

Haymarket, VA, November 28, 2008 . Over 70 seniors gathered at the Regency at Dominion Valley Club House on November 21 to learn about maintaining the health of their bones and joints. Dr. Vipul V. Parikh, a Primary Care Physician at Mountain View Internal Medicine & Pediatrics, spoke to the captive audience for 1 ½ hours on the topics of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. His talk entitled, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but arthritis can really hurt me!" addressed issues ranging from the need for joint replacement surgery in arthritic joints to bone density scanning for osteoporosis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis worldwide and affects 27 million adults in the United States. Osteoporosis is the leading cause of fractures in the elderly and affects 10 million Americans with an additional 34 million at risk. The audience was provided a comprehensive review of the known causes of both diseases, methods of diagnosis, and a discussion of prevention and treatment strategies. Some highlights from the talk:

Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints, mostly affecting the hands, hips, knees and spine.
Genetics likely plays a significant role in causing osteoarthritis.
There are no medications to prevent osteoarthritis, but a sensible exercise program and weight loss can help.
Arthroscopic surgery is not effective in reducing pain from osteoarthritis in most cases.
Joint replacement surgeries in hips and knees are effective in reducing pain from osteoarthritis and function well for over 10-15 years in most cases.
Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones and increases the risk for fractures in the hips and spine.
Central DEXA bone density scans evaluate bone density in the hip and spine and are the most effective way of screening for osteoporosis.
All women over age 65 and all men over age 70 should be screened for osteoporosis. Select women and men over age 50 should also be screened.
Medications are available that can prevent the loss of further bone density and in some cases reverse the process of osteoporosis.

Dr. Parikh concluded the talk by answering questions from the audience. The questions reflected a great deal of insight and interest from those in attendance. He addressed concerns about the effects and side effects of certain medications and vitamins, discussed the role of exercise in prevention and treatment of both diseases, and offered opinions about the relationship of other diseases to these conditions.

This talk was presented as part of the Health Education Seminar Series at the Regency in which area physicians are invited to talk about a health topic of interest to the community.
